Untitled sculpture. Reclaimed ply, glass, metal & acrylic paint. 30x30x13cm 2023.

The core of this bead shaped sculpture has been shaped from a block laminated plywood offcuts. The surface has an industrial finish made from painted crushed glass, it sits on the steel wire lengths repurposed from vintage fencing.

Egg I is the first of the series where a red wood core is shaped with a chainsaw when its surface has been divided into intersecting points to determine where the interchangeable pine spikes are placed. The remainder of the surface has been covered with pine cones collected from the forest floor.

Sculpture.JPG

An untitled sculpture made from a piece cracking of Holly destined for the stove. Initially carved with a chainsaw to achieve the basic shape and aperture. It is a conscious decision to consider the imperfections in the wood when developing work and in this case a  of slice pine as well as wood filler are intrinsic to the finished piece.

Alder Egg has turned leylandii core that was cut from a naturally fallen tree. The distinctive shape was chosen to give the appropriate spread of the lozenge shaped walnut detailing that spirals down the form in three separate lines. The remaining surface area has been covered with delicate Alder cones which have a convenient stalk and a Velcro quality that fixes each seed carrier in place.

Heading 1

Developing the concept and necessary approach is always the primary consideration to make a new body of work for an exhibition. It was essential to make smaller maquettes to experiment with ideas and the processes that would be transferred to when making the much larger sculptures. This beautiful piece of maple shows how the natural grain contributes to the success of the piece.

Redwood Pine marquette was perhaps the most successful of these small sculpture series. Form, size, grain and aperture fit so neatly together that its both pleasing to look at but a lovely piece to hold when one can appreciate how its heavy nature gives an additional sensory experience. So pleased with it I attempt to make a larger version with a gifted piece of Holly (above). Of course, that piece turned into something that stands by itself as an individual piece. Intention is only a starting point as each piece will find its own finishing point.

This experiment revealed another useful idea for the series Texture & Form. Carving shapes from blocks of reclaimed pine construction timber would be the ideal for those sculptures that were intended to be covered with another material. The raw finished surface also has an interesting quality of its own that could be left as it is.

Elm Sculpture. This small sculpture was a painstaking process of aligning the subtle and and dramatic curves. Made from a piece of Elm that sat in the studio for years forced the decision to create an aperture as it already had a hole through it. Wood normally destined for the stove can occasionally present possibilities.

Alder Peeble & Stake. Alder cones, Pine & Meranti Wood. 55x25x15cm..JPG

Alder Peeble with Stake has a core made out of laminated pine construction timber. The reference to the pebble shape refers  to times spent beachcombing but the practical inspiration for this piece was to chose a shape that would give the best possibilities to learn how I would systematically cover a form with alder cones that would hide the wooden core as well as create graduations of pattern.
